The adventures of the power hungry leprechaun who holds a beautiful alien princess hostage in order to marry her for her title and a chance to rule the universe.
today i truly understood why it is fucked to be 21 and home studying on a saturday night. curse u kids who got V-festival tix (i have a feeling it rox to b u right now)
sucks I hate new uni. there's too much work. i never see the orange chair cafe coffee club EVER! i miss them. i hate new classes with new people. i want my old friends back. i hate being behind in spanish and stuffing up. i hate being an adult and working and not having a life. i hate not seeing the sun. i hate my messy room and my sore back. i just needed to vent....
Well, here i am in Dublin Ireland. Had a couple of days to spare before my contiki tour so i thought i'd do something completely spontaneous and fly to dublin for 5 days. :)
Got cheap-ish flights and left on the morning of the 3rd nearly missing what can simply be described as an exhilarating flight full of all of the wonderful turbulence the atmosphere surrounding Ireland has to offer.
What else to tell you? got completely lost off my bus into Dublin and ended up hauling my 20kg up hills and the like for about an hour until i found my hostel. I arrived at the hostel with blisters on my hands, completely flustered from my getting lost and ready for a nanna nap (which i had in my dorm room which i share with 7 other random girls that change each day).
Irish people and Ireland is such a pleasant break from England and English people. Whilst being lost on my way towards the hostel i had people asking if i were lost, yet whilst lugging my large suitcase around London i had men turn and watch me haul it amused by my pain. Chivilry is dead in England, but frankly don't care cos pursuant to the last email, not that impressed by the Brits anyway.
Umm yeah had a lovely yummy dinner the first night, malteaser cheesecake and lots of wine before settling in for my first night. The next day was self indulgent with my shopping for most of the day (fallen in love with a pair of shoes that are way too expensive), eating thai for the first time in 3(??) weeks and doing a little bit of on foot sightseeing.
Got back to the hostel, straightened my hair and was then invited whilst walking around by an 18 year old Irish guy called Brian to play pool!! Yay, finally making friends. So yeah, played pool with a big group of internationals, half speaking french and half speaking english, drinking beer. Twas really cool, but it did have that funny element that bitchy women bring.
You see, everyone, especially women are shocked to find a woman, nay a young woman, travelling by herself. I get the feeling that instead of seeing it as an empowered thing they see it as being strange as if why don't i have girlfriends or my boyfriend to travel with. Anyways given up on the women, men are much cooler...they bring beer and invitations to play pool. YET, whilst we were doing this last night, some american girls from my room came in and although we all tried to include them, they just acted really really strange. In short, really don't understand or care for these trashy international women.
Anyhoo, went partying with a group of American boys (forced 3 out of bed to come, one of which was deathly sick with the flu *shame*) lol. Met up with the some of the Irish people, drank talked and ended up spending the rest of the night partying with a group of (yes this is random) American (californian to be precise) Rugby players and their pommy English friends. Apparently the Aussie accent is a hit with them so i had a good night.
Today I continue my random journeying. Hoping to do a bus tour thingy of the city and a tour of the Guiness factory (had my first sip of guiness last night....not as bad as the 'tastes like oil' description i got from the first group of Americans). Hope ur all well, will return back to London and will Contiki on the 8th/9th. Can't wait but also LOVING it here.
hey kids, in an internet cafe in Dublin, Ireland at the moment, realising that half the fun of travelling is analysing, documenting and relaying everything that you find worthwhile whilst you are away.
anyways todays bitch has to do with women. as much of a feminist as i am (and we all know i like to soapbox) i have to take a quick dig at women and the extent that they can and are immature a lot of the time.
whether you're in a club in sydney or travelling in dublin, women are ALWAYS in groups and always cliquey, whereas men are often much more independent and are a bit more polite. i know this is a massive generalisation but bare with me (not that by saying bare with me i promise to make sense here, cos we all know i generally don't).
i always saw travelling on my own as this sort of right of passage, kinda like moving from my beach town to the big city of sydney alone, something i must do to move to the next step, to be me. however, each female that i have talked to about this (and there has been a limited amount cos quite frankly the chavs shit me) are shocked that i am travelling alone. it's like without a man by my side or a girlfriend in which i can skip around with i am a subspecies. lol.
i just wish as women we celebrated our freedom and stopped this lack of identity crap that we tend to carry with us wherever we go. enjoy it bitches, i say
On a lighter note loving Dublin. The food is fantastic (i had the yummiest salad last night for dinner and malteaser cheesecake for desert OMG!!), the shopping is great, the people are pleasant...a definite must see from my perspective.
Taking a break today from being a tourist, i will hopefully buy some boots and maybe go see a movie. Just relaxing, which after the fatty food, fatty people and down right rudeness of London, i am thoroughly enjoying.
so lets not keep you in suspense....i'm in London, Engelland (i have no idea where that crazy pronounciation comes from - it's flowing thru my head - me thinks austin powers). Arrived here from Hong Kong at 8 something london time, cutting thru fog which has at this current point in time closed down heathrow and has left many pissed off, cold people hanging out at heathrow for more than 12 hours. Glad to be lucky today.
Flight was pleasant. Sat next to this really cute korean woman (who's name translated to english means brown rice??!!), who told me i made the flight lovely....which i think was really just a bad translation cos quite frankly i'd be a bitch to sit next to on long flights. Shifting my things, etc. But yeah i think she liked me cos i can speak tiny bits of korean - hey Seongu, anyoung - ti chinesta? haha
But yeah....let's get back to Hong Kong...the home of my heart. Left Sydney late Sunday night and due to the amount of partying, uni work and all of that, i slept very soundly thru the flight, until 3 or 4 in the morning HK time (which is like 6 or 7 Aus time), when we began landing. Hung out at the airport for about an hour or 2 until shuttles and that started heading to where i needed to go. Not really a concern for me, i just sat there reading Shantaram - one of those books you tend to get told to read from everyone.
Caught the shuttle to the hotel amongst many of my own oohs, aahs and wows. i was on this empty bus and the trip took about an hour. the sun was coming up and hong kong just radiated with this serene beauty. i know its prolly a very gen Y thing to say, but there was something beautiful about the tall buildings standing amid large mountains. A perfect blend between the old and new.
Got to the hotel in Kowloon and they took forever to check me in, but it was ok because there with Miz Wang (aka Wendy) and we had a lot too catch up on. Plus, the delay's turned out to be this massive blessing.
Turns out, Hong Kong, the home of my heart, is asleep until at least 10am with shops slowly opening until about 12am. Finally, somewhere that runs on Eb time!!!
So yeah, we went shopping, walking and sightseeing for about 13 or so hours. You see travellators and escalators everywhere and at first you wonder why, but once u realise how much walking there is to do, you understand that they are a godsend.
Got to see where Wen stayed whilst being at Poly U and she taught me little bits of canto (mmm goy is thank you). Caught the subway and its packed and exciting and i'm like the only non asian person there - the doors open at a station and with this excited/scary look wendy turns to me and goes "get out as soon possible!!" and i get this rush of fear like the doors are gonna slam shut on me or something. Turns out, there are about 150 + ppl getting off at the same time as you and if u don't rush to get on the escalators, you'll b waiting for a while on the platform.
Also, if u bump into ppl don't say sorry lol
Day 2 we woke up early (10am) and went across to Hong Kong island via the ferry. Wen thinks my canto pronouciation is good btw lol very excited about that one...
We walked thru Soho and Central - both very affluent trendy areas where there are way more white ppl. It's not that i'm racist, its just anyone who has travelled can assure you how daggy/embarrassing/stupid tourists are. i'm walking around hoping i'm not lumped in that bum bag wearing, I heart hong kong t-shirt owning group.
Wen and i went to the peak which overlooks the whole of Hong Kong (absolutely beautiful)....and then we went down and got ourselves into more shopping until 11pm at night.
And yeah, that's the short of my journey so far. I hope you're all well, lots of love and best wishes for the holiday season, Ebs xx
